WEEK
7 in the SWAC
Jackson State vs. Southern @ Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi (6 PM): This will be the battle to end all battles especially with so much at stake. Southern is one game away from being knocked out of SCG contention. JSU is riding high with a 3-0 conference mark. But let’s be honest here. This is JSU vs. Southern: the biggest intrastate rivalry in BCF. 65,000 fans are expected to be crammed into Memorial stadium to witness this classic gridiron and band battle. Both teams have been able to capitalize off the mistakes of their opponents all season long. Southern appears the most ripe for picking at this point as JSU should be able to stop anything offensively that SU throws at them. The JSU offense should be able to move the ball against a less than stellar SU defense. Yet, the game can still come down to the final play. Alabama A&M vs. Stillman @ Lewis Crews Stadium in Huntsville, AL (3 PM): There is really no logical reason to discuss this match-up. AAMU will beat Stillman before a paltry Homecoming crowd. Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs. Grambling State @ War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, AR (6 PM):
This game is billed as the Delta Literacy Classic. I have no idea what that means but this should be a good match-up. UAPB has been up and down all season so there is no way for me to logically know which team will show up against Grambling. Will it be the UAPB that drug Alcorn and upset Tuskegee or the UAPB that was beat like they stole something from the lowly Alabama State? Grambling struggled to beat a decent MS Valley State team this past Saturday. I expect them to do the same against UAPB. I am banking on a down week for UAPB. North Dakota State vs. Mississippi Valley State @ Fargo, ND (1 PM): The only logical thing I can say about this match-up is that Valley’s AD needs his azz whooped for scheduling this unnecessary cross-country beating. Alcorn State vs. Texas Southern @ Jack Spinks Stadium in Alcorn State, MS (2
PM): This should actually be a great match-up. Alcorn might even get a pleasant visit from the “Ocean of Soul”. Alcorn is coming off of an unimpressive win over Prairie View while Texas Southern is still reeling from a 29-5 loss suffered at the hands of Jackson State two weeks. However, that score could be misleading. Texas Southern gave JSU all they could handle before wearing down in the end. They also took AAMU to the wire. Logically, I think Alcorn is in trouble. Texas Southern has a stern defense and an opportunistic offense. That does not bode well for an Alcorn team with a few holes in its defense and an offense still in search of itself. |
