WEEK 5 in the SWAC
Sept. 28-30, 2006

Predictions by Tigerpride: THE Logical One

Maybe I did not make THE most Logical choices last week. Although most of the games were close, I was wrong about North Carolina Central, Alabama State, Alabama A&M, and Langston. Congratulations to all of those teams!! Jackson State did what they were supposed to do against Mississippi Valley as SIU drug UAPB as predicted.

AAMU….after a 3-1 start that has not been easy to attain, I am sure that they are happy to play OPEN this week.

Jackson State vs. Texas Southern @ Durley Stadium in Houston, TX (4 PM CST): Texas Southern’s defense is scary and honestly, JSU (while averaging over 30 ppg) is not an offensive well-oiled machine. Fortunately, the Texas Southern offense is not as mighty as its defense. The JSU defense should stack up well against this team considering that they performed admirably against teams with higher octane offenses. Durley Stadium is small and home field advantage can be effective if the Texas Tigers show up. However, the logical prediction follows the assumption that JSU has enough offense to move the ball against their staunch defense.
Prediction: Jackson State 31; Texas Southern 21

Tuskegee vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff @ Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, MO (4 PM CST): The UAPB team that showed up against 0-3 Alcorn is lurking around somewhere. However, they are still a below average 1-AA team. TU is coping with life after Comegy and they are performing at a level too great to logically suggest anything but a beatdown for UAPB from the Alabama Tigers.
Prediction: UAPB 7; TU 17

Prairie View A&M vs. Grambling @ The Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, TX (6 PM CST): Any logical thinking person can see that Grambling has played the toughest schedule to date in Black College Football. Playing Prairie View is going to be a welcomed sight. While a year ago, it appeared Prairie View had turned the corner, last week's performance and an early season loss to Texas Southern still suggest that they are still the PV of old. Grambling needs to make a statement, and they will. Landers has been replaced by what seems to be a more effective underclassman in Larry Kerlegan.
Prediction: Prairie View 10; Grambling 24

Southern vs. Alabama State @ Mumford Stadium in Bation Rouge, LA (7 PM CST): Southern did not perform well last week against one of the nation's top D2 HBCU’s. However, it would prove illogical to predict that they will perform so poorly against one of the worst 1-AA HBCU’s in the nation. SU still has not found a running game and they will have to find answer for Peck of Alabama State if they don’t want to get run over all night. However, defensively, SU should have enough to handle an offense trying to find an identity and they should have enough offense to beat a team that does not seem very strong defensively in the early season.
Prediction: Southern 30; Alabama State 24

Morehouse vs. Alcorn State @ Los Angeles, CA (TBA): Alcorn is bad this year…but Morehouse is worse. With wins over two of the weakest teams in the nation, Morehouse has at least tasted victory. If Alcorn had their schedule, they would have a number greater than “0” in the W column as well. Alcorn has engaged in a fight with Prairie View as the worst two teams in the SWAC this year….and I must admit, Prairie View appears to be winning. However, a 5th place, SWAC Eastern Division team should be able to beat Morehouse College.
Prediction: Alcorn State 17; Morehouse 14

Mississippi Valley State vs. Concordia @ Rice-Totten Stadium in Itta Bena, MS (5 PM CST): There is not much to say about this match-up. Logically, this should and will be an easy win for Mississippi Valley. It won’t be enough to dull the pain from the whoopin’ JSU put on them last week but a win should help.
Prediction: Mississippi Valley State 45; Concordia 10
