Miles Golden Bears (Coach: Wade Streeter) vs. Samford Bulldogs, 7 p.m., Seibert Stadium, Birmingham, AL

The Bama Bears wander crosstown to play OVC member Samford. Don't quite know what the Bears have been drinking but I have placed a call to Yogi, Boo Boo and Smokey for assistance. I don't think that will be enough. Mr. Ranger will be waiting at the bus with the stomach pump and ambulances. Bham Hounds over Bama Bears.

Ferris St. Bulldogs vs. Kentucky St. Thorobreds, 1 p.m., Alumni Stadium, Frankfort, KY

The Bulldogs journey down from midwest Michigan to Frankfort to meet KSU (1-0, 0-0) in its home opener. This is the first time the schools have played. The Bulldogs are members of the GLIAC, which is the conference home of the 2005 D-II champs, Grand Valley St. The Ponies pranced home from Owensboro with a 21-7 victory. Should be a stiffer test for KSU. Michigan Pups over the Ponies.

Lane Dragons vs. Saint Augustine Falcons, 1:30 p.m., Broughton Field, Raleigh, NC

Well now ain't this something!! The Dragons (1-0, 0-0) went to Jeff City, blew that breath and burned up the field with 450 yards of offense in a 36-0 shutout of the Blue Kats. Lincoln was only able to muster 56 yards of total offense. Johnnie Cole was probably doing cartwheels while the band played. Ok, there was no band. But the Dragons need not get too excited as they slither over to Raleigh to meet the CIAA Falcons in season opener. The Falcons look to build on 8-2 season of last year. NC Birds over Lame Lizards.

Benedict Tigers vs. Savannah St. Tigers (Coach: Theo Lemon), 5th Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic, 5 p.m., Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia S.C.

Another one of the clan fights. Savannah State is a former member of the SIAC (yeah, they watched the Jefferson's and wandered out of the forest, thinking they were moving up to the east side. Unfortunately, they're homeless and continue to wander around). The Orange Tigers start the season on the road against Benedict (0-1, 0-1), which lost to Morehouse by a point last week. The S.C. Tigers won the 2005 game played in Savannah 31-14. There has been so much turmoil in Savannah State's athletics department, it is difficult to imagine that any quick fix has been made. S.C. Cousins over Orange Cousins.

Morehouse Tigers vs. Fort Valley St. Wildcats, 6 p.m., Wildcats Stadium, Ft. Valley, GA

The Maroon Tigers (1-0, 1-0) stroll down I-75 to tussle with Ft. Valley (1-0, 1-0) in its home opener. The Tigers are still grinning after coming from behind to beat the S.C. Cousins 25-24. The Wildcats, who just squeaked by the ATL Cats 9-8, will need to beef up the offense this week or it will be a lonnnnnng Saturday night for the Wildcat faithful. Wildkitties over Maroon Cousins.

Valdosta St. Blazers vs. Albany St. Golden Rams, 7 p.m., Albany Municipal Stadium, Albany, GA

This annual battle is a neighborhood brawl in the truest sense. Both schools are in southwest Georgia and a lot of the players know each other. The perennial contenders from the Gulf South Conference are playing season opener. The Rams (0-1, 0-0) will try to recover from the 20-0 peckdown by the N.C. Fowl. Ft. Valley's 2005 starting QB transferred and is rumored to be the starting QB for Valdosta. The Golden Rams play well at home but home field means nothing this week. Blazers over Golden Goats.

Cheney St. Wolves (Coach: Tim Newsom) vs. Clark Atlanta Panther, 7 p.m., Panther Stadium, Atlanta, GA

The Panthers (0-1, 0-1) lost 9-8 in a defensive struggle against Ft. Valley. The Wolves, members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, are playing their season opener. Look for the Clark Atlanta to step it up on offense. Black Cats over Wolves.

Short shot: Three current MEAC schools are former members of SIAC: BCC, FAMU, and SCSU.

Long Pour: SIAC.com Co-Offensive Players of the Week: Kevin Huff - Tuskegee (Sr, QB, 6-2, 218, Tampa, FL) and Eddie Rowe - Morehouse (Sr, RB, 6-0, 220, Atlanta, GA); Co-Defensive Players of the Week: Rafael Horton - Fort Valley State (Sr, LB, 6-1, 235, Barnesville, GA) and Robert Harris - Morehouse (Sr, SS, 6-2, 200, Murfreesboro, TN); Co-Newcomers of the Week: Jerimy Watson - Kentucky State (Jr, QB, 6-6, 230, Grenada, MS) and Jonathan Hall - Tuskegee (Fr, LB, 5-10, 225, Mobile, AL); Co-Special Teams Players of the Week: Jacoby Jones - Lane (Sr, PR/KR, 6-4, 210, New Orleans, LA) and Jerome Bryant - Kentucky State (Jr, RS, 5-10, 190, Boynton Beach, FL); Co-Offensive Linemen of the Week: Clairborne Green - Morehouse (Sr, G, 6-4, 330, Watkinsville, GA) and Larry Peoples - Tuskegee (Jr, OL, 6-6, 302, Jacksonville, FL)

Sober Thought: The Tuskegee-Stillman game was broadcast on ESPNU last weekend. The Immaculate One (SIAC Commish Lide) boldly says something to the effect: "There are 15 member institutions in the SIAC..." Meanwhile, only 12 logos are shown on the screen. Perhaps he didn't get his press release last spring that announced that Lincoln and Langston were rescinding membership due to financial considerations. Claflin University is still in provisional status. Tacky!!!!!
