Week 1 in the SWAC

Predictions by Tigerpride: THE Logical One

The time has come for the most storied league in Black College Football to kick off the 2006 season. We begin the season with a key a SWAC West division game and a couple of exciting non-conference match-ups. We will get a sneak peak into who will hold the BCF bragging rights for 2006 as Grambling and Southern look to defend the SWAC’s honor when they face Hampton and Bethune-Cookman College of the MEAC.

Troy vs. Alabama State in Troy, AL:

The only logical thing to do here is not to spend a lot of time on this match-up. While it is a great matchup for the state of Alabama, it is not going to be a good day for Alabama State. I was not logical to even read the season outlook for the Troy Trojans. Everyone knows this will be the worst season Alabama State has seen in a long time.   Prediction: (This will be over by halftime) Alabama State 7; Troy 45

Grambling State vs. Hampton @Legion Field in Birmingham, AL (11:00 am Ford MEAC/SWAC Challenge, ESPN2):

In what is logically, the most anticipated match-up of the off-season, two of the top teams in BCF will square off in front of one of the smallest crowds of the opening weekend. While there was great logic behind the format of this event, the location and lack of the traveling fan bases of the two competing universities are laughable. The SWAC will not lose a non-conference game this year to MEAC competition because history has proven that when a good MEAC team faces a good SWAC team, the SWAC team typically prevails. Hampton’s offense will be their Achilles heel. With a new offensive coordinator and lack of aerial attack, they will not be able to keep up with the Grambling offense.  Prediction: Grambling 28; Hampton 10

Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs. Miss Valley State @ Soldier Field in Chicago, IL (4:00 pm, Chicago Football Classic):

Mickey Dean University will face the program made famous by Jerry Rice. It is only logical that Mickey Dean gets to be the workhorse in the matchup; yet, it is illogical to assume they have any chance of containing Aries Nelson. Expect another 45,000 fans to pack Soldier Field for what promises to be a great game.
Prediction: MS Valley 21; UAPB 13

Tennessee State vs. Alabama A&M @ Nashville, TN (6:00 pm John Merritt Classic):

Word on the street is that Tennessee State has a transfer QB who is going to bring the offensive fire back to Nashville. AAMU is known for having a great defense that collapses in the face of a good aerial attack. Both teams return a lot of starters but the key to this match-up will be intensity and the ability for Tennessee State to air out the ball against an attacking AAMU defense that is prone for leaving its DB’s on an island. However, there is not one single shred of logic to believe Fred Kaiss (TSU’s offensive coordinator) will have the good sense to do this.  Prediction: AAMU 24; TNState 21

Louisiana-Monroe vs. Alcorn State in Monroe, LA (6:00 pm):

The last time these two teams met, Louisiana-Monroe was named Northeastern Louisiana. In a game that featured star QB Steve “Air” McNair, Alcorn’s defense had no answer for Northeastern’s offense that dropped over 70 points on the Braves in the 1-AA playoff loss. It would prove logical for Alcorn to call in sick to avoid yet another beating at the hands of a bottom tier 1-A program. I hope the money is worth the whoopin’.  Prediction: Alcorn 0; UL-Monroe 45

Jackson State vs. Paul Quinn @ Memorial Stadium in Jackson, MS (6:00 pm):

As the JSU Mafia packs the stands of the fabled Memorial Stadium an hour before kickoff to get a first glimpse of the Comegy-era, the Sonic BOOM of the South will tell the story that will send opposing teams a message for the season as they tell the JSU opponents to “Get Ready” for a team that “Came to Play” a sport where “Nobody Does it Better”!!! It was completely logical for JSU to schedule this scrimmage to allow a team of veterans along with 1-A and JUCO transfers to gel together as a unit. It is a perfect design for great social outing for JSU family and friends.  Prediction: Paul Quinn 14 (4th quarter points); JSU 52

Southern vs. Bethune-Cookman @ Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, FL (7:00 pm, 53rd Annual Gateway Classic):

This game will have it all: Great fans, great bands, and great teams!! The teams seem to be about equally matched so read above to learn how to logically pick SWAC/MEAC winners.  Prediction: Southern 21; BCC 20

Prairie View A&M vs. Texas Southern @ Reliant Stadium in Houston, TX (7:00pm, Labor Day Classic):

Texas Southern is the new Prairie View of Black College Football. How ironic!!! Last year, the Panthers prevailed in a close match-up against their most hated rival. However, this time around, the game has already been won in the offseason. While Texas Southern continues to collapse, Prairie View is continuing to build onto a solid foundation. Not so long ago, Texas Southern beat a Steve Wilson coached Howard University that had Ted White as the quarterback without even pretending to pass the ball. Texas Southern ran at will. What’s the logic in hiring a man that the previous coached drug up and down the field?  Prediction: Prairie View 35; Texas Southern 21
